Fixing frozen pizza (microwave+toaster oven)

jeudi 28 septembre 2017

I often fix a small 9.2oz Digiorno frozen pizza, traditional crust. I never look at package directions -- no fun that way. I've experimented:
  1. Preheat the toaster oven to bake at 450deg.
  2. Take pizza out of package and wrapping.
  3. Dip bottom of pizza in water and sprinkle a little water on top.
  4. Set microwave to low power (2 out of 10). Add red pepper flakes to top.
  5. Heat pizza in microwave for 30 seconds. Crust should wind up cool and pliable.
  6. Set timer on toaster oven to 16 minutes and cook pizza on bare rack.
  7. A few minutes before the 16 minutes are up, scatter some shredded mozzarella on top of the pizza.
  8. Thump the crust to get a hollow sound to test doneness.

Ron Jacobs March 1977 radio interviews

mercredi 20 septembre 2017

I have been part of the documentary team Na Maka o ka 'Aina (HawaiianVoice.com) for the past four decades. Currently I am serving as an associate producer to Moloka'i filmmaker Matt Yamashita who is producing a documentary about Walter Ritte and his early activism in groups such as the Protect Kaho'olawe 'Ohana (http://ift.tt/2wyECen). My role is to research archival film/video/photo/radio resources.

I found a Wayne Harada column in an issue of the Honolulu Advertiser that mentions a KKUA on-air interview Rob Jacobs did with Walter Ritte on March 16, 1977. Apparently there was a previous interview a week earlier, during the time that everyone was searching for George Helm and Kimo Mitchell who had gone missing in the waters off Kaho'olawe. The date of the first interview would have been around March 8 or 9.

We are very interested in knowing if any recordings of those radio broadcasts might still exist. Mahalo for any comments or suggestions!

"The Orville" on Fox

The Fox network started to air a scifi parody series called The Orville.

The Orville is the name of the starship that the cast of characters travel in. The characters include the captain of this starship who for the past year was in funk because his wife slept with an alien. They got divorced and for some bizarre reason she is the first officer of The Orville.

The helmsman is a very good friend of the captain but he too has his issues, while the navigator always needs to drink a soda while on duty.

The security officer is from a high gravity world which gives her great strength and able to make long jumps. The second officer is a single sex species that uses the restroom once a year.

It airs on Sunday nights at 8:00 pm (HST) on the Fox network.

"Inhumans" on ABC

The TV series Inhumans will air on ABC starting on September 29, 2017.

This series is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and was filmed on Oahu.

The first two episodes had been released as an Imax presentation in early September. My usual movie going friend and I saw it during the Labor Day weekend.

If you never read the comic series, it is mostly about a group of people known as the Inhumans who a long time ago this race of people were transformed to be superhuman soldiers by the alien Kree to fight in their wars. However the transformation is not consistent, for instance their king Black Bolt's power is his voice that will make sonic destructive waves, his wife Medusa power is her long red hair which can be used as additional limbs and is strong enough to grab a person and fling them across the room. Medusa's sister Crystal has the power to control the four elemental forces. One cousin of theirs can live in the water, while another cousin has hoofs for feet and can make minor earthquakes.

Some of the Inhuman comic stories and of this series deals with Black Bolt's brother named Maximus who usurps the throne and declares himself king of the Inhumans and wants to wage war with the humans for control of the planet Earth.

Two unusual streamers.

I'm starting to explore Internet streaming TV, and I stumbled across a couple of interesting things you might not have noticed yet. (1) Netflix' serial "Grace and Frankie" (Netflix costs me $12/month); (2) the Full Moon channel on Amazon video (costs $6.99/month).

Grace and Frankie is a situation comedy about two wives whose gay husbands decide to divorce them and get married to each other. My wife likes it a lot -- I'm lukewarm. It has a very strong cast: Jane Fonda, Martin Sheen, Lily Tomlin, Sam Waterston. There are 3 seasons available and a 4th season begins in 2018. Here's an interview with the stars playing Grace & Frankie: http://ift.tt/2wyXIMK.

Full Moon is a collection of old low budget horror and exploitation flicks: http://ift.tt/2wzDNgm.

ALOHA end Street sign.

mercredi 13 septembre 2017

I remember seeing a photo here of a street sign for ALOHA (St., Ln., etc) that read "ALOHA end."

Searching for half an hour I can't find it.
Does anyone recall where it is or who posted it?

Close Enounters of the Third Kind (1977)

lundi 4 septembre 2017

My usual movie going friend made the suggestion of attending Close Encounters of the Third Kind which the 40th Anniversary edition is being shown in theaters. We attended the Sunday (9/3/17) afternoon showing at the Ward Theater which was lightly attended.

It has been a long while since I have seen it and my friend mentioned that she never seen it on the big screen before.

The showing had no previews but there was a 15 minute presentation before the movie that had Steven Spielberg, JJ Abrams and a couple of other people talking about making Close Encounters of the Third Kind and its effects on movie making since then.

Another thing I noticed in the ending credits was the inclusion of Lance Henriksen. I didn't notice him in the movie.
