The License Plate Game

samedi 26 mars 2016

When my son was in elementary school and high school, I would pick him up and drive him home. A boring daily drive from Pearl Harbor to Kahalu`u.

I invented a game to keep him engaged, strengthen his vocabulary and have fun on the long drive.

Most Hawai`i license plates have 3 letters and 3 numbers. The letters range from AAA to (currently) S**, commercial vehicles letters start with T, and are reversed with the numbers. ### T**

The game is: we alternate selecting a license plate, saying the letters, and it is up to the other person to construct a cogent phrase, example:

Me: JTJ
Him: Jack Tumbled Jill

Then it is the selector's turn to try and come up with something better.
Me: Just try juice.

He won that round.

We learned early on to ignore plates with Z or X, because of limited word choices.

We have seen older plates going back to F**, H** plates from the Big Island, L** plates from Lanai, M** plates from Maui, which are more rare on Oahu, and more fun. He's all grown up now (22 yo) and we still play it.

I still remember my plate from 1981: BCX 068, I think they still had the Kamehameha head back then.

Lately I have seen Hawai`i plates starting with Z, I have no idea from where or why.

Beginning letters I know of, from O`ahu unless stated otherwise:

A**
B** (1981)
BUS (da bus)
BWS (board of water supply)
C**
D**
E**
F**
G** (from about 1999-2000)
H** (Big Island)
HPD (Police)
I - Not used
J**
K** (Kauai)
L** (Lanai)
M** (Maui)
N**
O - Not used
P**
Q - Not used
R**
S**
T** (commercial vehicles)
U** (not seen yet)
V** (not seen yet)
W** (not seen yet)
X** (not seen yet)
Y** (not seen yet)
Z** (???)

I have no idea why U through Y haven't been used and they skipped to Z; any ideas?

Corrections to my assumptions are welcome.
If you need something to pass the time while driving (or stuck in traffic), enjoy!

;)

are big crowds to be expected or will Hawaii people sit on their butts as usual?
I know I'll be voting for Sanders, but had to search for where to go...

TheCab ads remind me of a Blackface routine

mardi 15 mars 2016

I am transgender and wonder if any other transgender people find TheCab's Frank Delima ads offensive?

To me they remind me of a Blackface routine. Something that was done in the past but in today's world is way past being even remotely acceptable.

I doubt if non-transgender people would get what I'm saying... Lighten-up! It's all in fun after all!

To that I would say if it's ok for the masses to mock a minority then would you be ok with ads that laughed at people in wheelchairs, people with mental problems or how about laughing at vets with lost limbs? What a riot.

The basis of Frank Delima's ads is that when you see a man in female attire, it's funny. I'm a male and I wear skirts every day. To me the ads tell kids that's funny. It might have been ok in Shakespeare's day and yes 35 years ago I laughed at Monty Python but it's 2016 and, like with Blackface routines, sometimes things that were tolerated in the past need to be reevaluated.

BTW I do like Frank, he's a great guy and I'm sure he just isn't aware that there are people like me that don't enjoy being laughed at simply because of the way we are.

I've been wearing skirts out-and-about for about 3 years now and have got very little flack from anybody. But guess how many other people I've seen like me? Answer: zero. Maybe I'm the only transgender here. No the answer is that it's because I'm older, retired and not worried about losing my job. It's stuff like TheCab drag queen "comedy" that stop pretty much 100% of trangenders from living how they would like to. That's why it's, so far, almost entirely people my age or older (Bruce Jenner) that feel ok not living in a phony way.

All the kids who should feel ok won't as long as society thinks that we are a joke. I feel sorry for the kids and wish I could have been encouraged to live as an "in-betweener" 50 years ago.

Things like TheCab ad send kids the massage: hide or people will laugh at you.

Bridge of Spies

dimanche 13 mars 2016

Saw the movie Bridge of Spies at the Ward Theater with a friend on 11/8/15 (yeah I know it's been a while).

I suspect anyone over 45 years old might know the name Francis Gary Powers and what happen to him in the early 1960's, while this movie tells a little about that incident, it is mostly about the lawyer who represented the man who they traded for Francis Gary Powers, when said man was arrested for spying in the United States in the late 1950's.

Gods of Egypt

jeudi 10 mars 2016

My son dragged me to this, and I must say, I actually enjoyed it, though I know many will not.

First, it was pure conjectural fantasy loosely based on early Egyptian mythology.
With no substantial grounding in this mythology, I cannot determine any degree of accuracy. This is entertainment, not lore or history.

Second, the CGI and the action scenes were quite well done. It was quite entertaining and fun. Very colorful and dynamic.

Third, the plot line was quite simplistic and somewhat unrealistic.

Finally, you will either love it or hate it. I was quite satisfied, and I'm generally not easy to please.

Shirokiya Moving Sale

samedi 5 mars 2016

Shirokiya, long-time Ala Moana Center fixture next to Macy's, is closing at the end of March and will move to its new location at the new Ewa Wing as "Shirokiya's Japan Village Walk" in June. In the meantime, they're having closing sales.

I stumbled across this today:

This weekend only (March 5 & 6), they're having a sale at their Book Off section--books 50% off the already low prices, as well as 20% off DVDs, and more. After this weekend, Book Off will close. So if you're hunting for book/video bargains, you have till tomorrow.

There was also a little blurb on one of the sign that said Book Off will be moving to Don Quijote. And also a small flyer saying they're opening a new store, Connect (books, movies, and music) at Ward Warehouse (Village?) next to Menchi's. Not sure if these two has or will happen.

It's all about playing time. He could've waited to be the star of the team next year. The good players are going to leave because of next year's postseason probation.
